So You're Telling Me There's A Chance?
| |||
![]() A new check-in system didn't stop the 2nd ESL Open Cup from being the most competitive Cup to date. As the Administrators scrambled to set the seeds to the 16th position, the stage was being set for early round matches sure to please!
The first round went pretty much as expected with almost every better seed winning easily. It was the second round that saw some very intense matches and it continued from there (until the finals).
Top seeded and current Cup Points Leader, Chance was a bit surprised when 'Boots' came kicking. The final was a modest 12:5 win on ztn for Chance. The 5th seed, rusty and inebriated, gellehsak was hooked a bit by Gillz but was able to pull it out with a 10:2 win. Raul, a late comer, was given the 4th seed and if his first round 'skate by' was not enough, he would meet weejaisher in round 2. Weejaisher gave up a fight for about half the map before raul crossed the border for the win. Mortal1, currently 4th in Cup Points and 6th seed, saw his life flash before his eyes with a 4:3 win over klaovhwn. The quarterfinals were set and the players prepared for the 'best of 3' map format. Eighth seeded Judge gave up a fight, but Chance hammered down the gavel with a 2:0 map win to advance to his 3rd straight semifinal Cup match. You could see the players moaning on IRC as they saw their 'chances' slipping away. A third straight Cup was two matches away for the 'Golden Boy From Iowa'. (note: I just gave him that nickname, lets make it stick!) In the other quarterfinal matches, gellehsak sent raul back home, Ziel disposed of mortal1 and cliffy couldn't figure dcoy out. Twenty-eight matches now completed and seeds 1,2,3,5 all but remained. Would Chance 3peat or would his teammate gellehsak dethrone him? Would dcoy have another shot at the Championship or would Ziel's anger over his 32nd seed in the last cup propel him further? Gellehsak was out of the semifinals before it even started, as server and time issues took his eye off the ball. Chance rolled him in two straight maps and the community continued its moan as he advanced to yet another Championship match. The most intense match of the night saw Ziel and dcoy battle intensely for 3 maps, before dcoy was able to move past him and into his second Championship match.. again versus Chance. The final came down to the 1st seed versus the 2nd, as the Administrators had predicted, and as previously it was anti-climactic. Chance had little trouble with dcoy and his 'rush first, think later' approach. Chance wins his third straight Cup, leads all players in Cup Points and has already qualified for the IEM Group Stage in September. Will anyone be able to stop him? The call has been put out for the best in the US to step up and take a 'chance'. Will the call be answered?
